Fishing in San Francisco has been hurt due to the oil spil.
"There's a good chance we would postpone the season if the spill extends over the crab grounds," Collins said. "I'm just one fisherman, but I think we should postpone it. If the crab come up through the fuel, they could be contaminated."

This month, the fishermen - some of whom use several hundred of liters of diesel each day to power their boats - blocked fuel depots in Atlantic coastal regions to draw attention to costs that have climbed to about 50 euro cents a liter up from about 30 euro cents a liter. Only below 30 euro cents a liter can fishing be profitable, they say.

"A coelacanth, an ancient fish once thought to have become extinct when it disappeared from fossil records 80 million years ago, is shown in Nairobi, Kenya, in this Novemeber 21, 2001 file photo. Fishermen in Zanzibar have caught a coelacanth, an official said on Sunday."

Fishing Old School
You think you have it tough going now? Try fishing with some tied horse hair. I've been poked fun of for my old time fishing techniques, but Eirc Sharp says, "Fourteen-to-20 foot cane poles sell for a few bucks at tackle and hardware stores, and they'll work just as well as my overpriced Italian whip."
Read Eric Sharp's full old school adventure here.

The Ross Barnett Reservior report sounds a little shaky.
"When I was on the Conservation Congress, my philosophy was to keep the rules simple so you could carry them around a pocket guide," Schommer said. "Now they're printing out whole manuals of this stuff. We're turning off people to fishing by approving all these rules." Ellsworth rules are becoming a book.

Governor Declares Massachusetts Fishing a Disaster
For the first time ever, a state is using federal regulations to declare a disaster. From the Patriot Ledger, "Patrick, in his submission to Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, said that revenues for Massachusetts groundfish boats fell to $36.5 million in 2006 from $44.6 million in 2005. The administration estimated that the overall industry lost nearly $22 million in sales last year." The basis of the argument is that the regulations are too tight and the stocks are back to normal levels.

Fishing in Edgewater
We took Captain Nate's boat yesterday and had a decent day. The wind was real rough and navigating the backwaters wasn't the best. We may have run up against some reds late in the day, but it may have been heat stroke making us think so as we didn't bring any in. There were jack, porgy, catfish, and some flounder. We caught two to bring back. There were also some mean sunburns to be caught that day.
